Oman higher education

Education in Oman includes several levels of study leading to different credentials. To simplify the process, the Oman Qualifications Framework (OQF) was designed to identify all qualifications in the public and private sectors of education and training.

We have provided a very short list of the 10 levels of the Frameworks. This short list, which is not all inclusive, includes professional, academic, technological, and technical/vocational qualifications. Primary education is at level 2, while secondary education is available at levels 3 and 4. Post-secondary education is offered at levels 5 through 10.

To aid in transparency, the Credit Accumulation and Transfer (CAT) system has also been implemented. In the CAT system, one year of full-time study results in 60 CAT credits. In the U.S. semester-based system, one year of full-time undergraduate study represents approximately 30 credit hours. The standard conversion from CAT credits to U.S. credit hours is 2:1. CAT is a system for measuring and comparing the study attainment and performance of students based on workload, not on contact hours.

Each year of a Bachelor degree program requires 120 CAT credits for a total of 480 CAT credits. Similarly, an Associate Degree would require 240 credits, and a 1.5 year Master's degree would require 180 credits.
