At the University of the West Indies, Mona campus, three different nursing programs are offered: A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN degree), a Bachelor of Science in Nursing post-RN (BScN post RN), and a Master of Science in Nursing (MscN).
At the undergraduate level, the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program requires at least two passes on the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) or General Certificate of Education Advanced Level (GCE A Level) exams. The program requires completion of three years of full-time study and three periods of summer clinical practice, leading to a total of 120 credits.
In contrast, the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Post RN, or post Registered Nurse, program was created as a “top-up” degree program for those who already hold a registered nursing qualification such as a 3-year hospital-based Diploma in Nursing or 2-3 year Associate Degree in Nursing.
The post-RN program was designed to upgrade the basic nursing qualification throughout the Caribbean and allowed registered nurses to earn a Bachelor's degree in a shorter amount of time. The Post RN program requires completion of 59-66 credits. Depending on the campus and the admissions credential, this program typically takes 4 semesters of full-time study or 6-8 semesters of part-time enrollment, though a 30-month online program is also available for part-time study.
